ISSA President Tim Hogan
ISSA recently concluded their Annual Meeting for High School Sailing. This is the 83rd year in existence and our program is in great shape. Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) has added 100 high school sailing teams in the last 5 years. We are now up to 465 schools and have approximately 5,000 sailors participating. This growth is fantastic but we have a number of challenges that arise with this expansion.
Congratulations to Riverview High School of Sarasota, Florida for winning the 2013 Great Oaks Regatta. The Riverview team of Sam Armington and Aaron Burnett also won the Larry and Babs White Trophy as the top first-time team.
The 2013 Atlantic Coast Championship [ACCs] were hosted by Annapolis Yacht Club and Severn Sailing Association using both of their fleets of 420s. 18 schools representing teams from MASSA, MISSA, NESSA and SAISA competed in the two day event.
Matthew Long (Dos Pueblos HS, PCISA) had a strong day to win the Laser Fleet and Gary Prieto (Southold HS, MASSA) had all top six finishes on Sunday to take the Radial Fleet.
It was unseasonably warm in Newport today, but that lead to very light and shifty breezes. The race management team did a good job of finding suitable wind over the course of the day and were able to run 4 races in each fleet.
